History of Henderson

Henderson is set to turn 60 in 2013! The township of Henderson began in the 1940s with the discovery of magnesium in the area, which was coined the “miracle metal” of World War II. When magnesium demand dropped off after the war, the population of Henderson was greatly reduced, and the US War Asset Administration actually offered the town for sale as war surplus property. The Nevada Legislature approved a bill giving the Colorado River Commission of Nevada the authority to purchase Henderson’s industrial plants, thus saving the town from becoming surplus property.

Henderson was officially incorporated in 1953. Originally just 13 square miles, the city soon grew and prospered. Today Henderson is 94 square miles and is home to several shopping malls, movie theatre complexes, restaurants and casino resorts. It is bordered by Las Vegas and supports a number of cultural events of its own, including “Shakespeare in the Park”. Henderson is located a few short miles from McCarran International Airport.
